Pine tree design sketch in black ink

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A single pine tree is drawn diagonally across a sheet of white paper, with a slender trunk tapering to the lower left and a sparse, feathery canopy of branches toward the upper right. The linework is dark and textured, using short strokes and dense clusters to suggest needles and shading, with no colour. A black pen lies along the lower right edge of the frame.

The ferry left Oban with a lorry full of fence posts and nobody on the top deck but Ailsa Crane and a gull with one foot. She had come to the island to sort out her late uncle's croft, not to think about trees, but the pines were the first thing she saw when the boat swung into the bay. Only one stood apart from the rest, on the rise above the slipway, leaning hard toward the sea as if it had heard a better offer across the water.

The man at the shop told her it had been planted by a sheep farmer who wanted a windbreak and got a monument instead. Every winter the gales took a little more of its crown, and every spring it sent out new shoots from the bare places. He said it with the satisfaction of someone describing a neighbour's stubbornness. Ailsa bought bread and a tin of soup and walked up the rise with the heavy thing in her chest that had come with her on the boat.

She sat under the trunk until the light went orange. The needles were fine as hair and made a soft hiss when the wind moved them. She noticed the branches grew in the direction the weather pushed, so that the whole tree seemed to be leaning into its own future. She picked up a fallen cone, turned it over, and found she was ready to go home. She left the cone where it had been, because some things belonged to the hill, and walked down to the boat with her hands in her pockets.
