Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
Five vertical strips of black linework run side by side on a white background. The strips include curling tendrils with dots, a wavy vine, a chain of open circles, a vine with small flowers and dots, and a vine with spiral curls. The lines are thin and even, with no shading or colour.

On the ninth day of rain the widow at the back of Sallow Market sold five lengths of vine to a man in a grey coat. She had cut them from the wall of her yard that morning, and they dripped on the cobbles while he counted out his coins. Each one grows differently, she told him, so he should not be surprised by it.

The first ran in tight curls and let fall dots of seed like spilt pepper. The second went wavy, rising and sinking as though it followed a river nobody else could see. The third was a chain of open rings, one above another, and the fourth bore small white flowers with a bead of dew at each one. The fifth wound itself in spirals that tightened toward the top. Plant them where the wind comes through, she said. They will find each other.
He strung them along the fence of a cottage at the edge of the marsh, and the rain kept on. By the end of the month the five vines had crossed the lane and knotted into one rope, so that anyone wanting to pass had to duck under the green. The cottage's keeper, a girl named Ida Marrow, learned to walk beneath them and count the flowers each morning.
When the rain finally stopped, the vines stayed as they were. Ida went looking for the man in the grey coat and found only the widow's empty stall, a wet coin in the gutter, and a single curl of vine lying on the cobbles, still green, still turning towards the sky.
