The gatekeeper's wife at Varrow Pass strung the fringe herself the spring the river rose and took the old bridge. Three iron bars hung across the arch, and from each she let down drops of bone and tin, knotted cord, scrolled wire, blue glass dots and copper leaves cut in the shape of teardrops. Every traveller had to brush under them. The drops chimed as they passed, and the gatekeeper's boy, Tomas, wrote down the crossings by ear, because his mother said a bell tells the truth where a man does not.

One autumn a dealer in linen came up the road with two mules and a long face. He paid the toll in full and then walked under the arch so slowly that the drops hung still, as if the air had gone out of them. Tomas counted nothing. He went out to the road and found the lowest row was not swinging at all. The dealer had tied a fine thread to the bottom teardrops and was holding them flat with his fingers, so the bolts on his mules would pass without a sound.
Tomas said nothing at the gate. That night he climbed onto the stones with his mother's pliers and a copper leaf of his own. He fixed it to the middle bar, where the dealer would have to brush it on the way back, and he set it to ring loud as a kettle. The dealer came down the pass in the grey of morning, forgot his care, and the leaf rang out over the whole valley.
The linen was seized at the far gate, and the dealer was never seen on that road again. The copper leaf still hangs at the middle bar, gone green at the edges, and every crossing in Varrow rings it once before the rest of the fringe answers.
