Nobody in Walsall had ever asked for a divider line on a wedding car until Maureen Teague walked into the unit with a Vauxhall Viva and a shoebox of photographs. The car had been her late husband's. She wanted it striped for the day her daughter married, and she wanted it done freehand, no stencil, the way Stan used to do it before his hands went.

I took the job because the Viva had good bones, and because Stan had taught me my first curl thirty years back, on a bread van nobody remembers now. I thinned the gold enamel, cut the sable down to a single hair, and started at the bonnet, where a flourish has to lift like a held breath before it drops over the arch of the wheel.
The hardest one was the centre piece, the divider that runs across the boot. It has to mirror itself exactly, two swirls rising from one point and folding over each other in overlapping ovals, and you cannot correct it once the paint skins. I drew it three times on card first. On the fourth attempt my hand stayed steady for the length of a long breath, and I pulled the whole thing in one go.
On the morning of the wedding Maureen came out in her good coat, looked at the boot for a long while, and said Stan would have wanted it a touch fancier. I told her it was fancy enough. She laughed and said that was exactly what he would have said, and she got into the car without touching the paint.
