Fine line unalome tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a thin black line tattoo on the side of a finger, shown against a palm view with a kitchen background. The design is a single continuous line forming a spiral at the base, a run of small loops in the middle and a dot at the tip, resembling an unalome. The linework is crisp and even with no shading, and the monochrome ink sits in the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are underneath Duke Street at ten past two, kneeling on wet brick in a service tunnel that smells of diesel and cold pennies. The fault has been walking for three nights, a flicker that comes and goes along the feeder like a man who won't give his name. The supervisor has given you until dawn and a torch with a dying battery.

You start where the cable comes in, a coil of old lead-sheathed line wound round a rusted hook, tight as a spring. Nobody has touched it since the war. You unwind it slowly, because hurry is how people lose a whole street. Each turn gives up a little slack, and then the wire runs straight through a knot of junction loops where three circuits bind together. You follow each loop with your fingertip the way you'd follow a sentence you half remember.

Near four the meter stops jumping. The fault is a hairline crack where water has crept into the sleeve, a dark bead no bigger than a full stop. You cut it out, splice it, tape it, and wait with the torch off, listening to the drip.

When you climb up the access shaft, the sky over the car park has gone the colour of weak tea. Above the bus shelter a single lamp comes on in a flat window, and someone you will never meet fills a kettle. You stand in the cold and watch that one light, and it is enough.
