Braided band with feathers and medallion on calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A braided band wraps horizontally across the lower leg, with a round medallion at its centre decorated with red petal-like shapes on an orange and yellow ground. Three feathers hang beneath the medallion, shaded in pinks and browns with dark black outlines and details. The composition is centred on the leg against plain skin, and the colour is bold with red, orange and brown dominating.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, 14th November. Mr Garrow says I have the hands for plaiting now, though he still makes me unpick the first six inches of every band because my tension wanders. This morning he took the round brass disc out of the tin he keeps under the bench, the one with the red enamel petals worn half away, and told me to set it in the middle of a belt for the lad from the farm at Acomb. Three pheasant feathers, he said, no more, or it looks like a dresser's duster.

I braided seven strands of tan calfskin under the lamp, because the light goes by three o'clock in November and he won't have me working blind. The disc sat at the centre, and I stitched it down through the holes he had punched with the awl. When I finished, the red petals caught the lamplight and looked wet. Garrow came over, turned the band in his fingers for a long while, and then said his father used to tell him a band like that should be worn somewhere a man can see it move.

The lad came back at dusk, wanting to know if rain would spoil it. Garrow said feathers don't mind rain, only neglect, and charged him four shillings for the lot, which is more than the leather cost. I watched the boy tie the band round his shin under the streetlamp, the feathers swinging as he walked off towards the bridge.

I kept the offcut. It is in my coat pocket now, and every time I reach for my pencil I find the little red petals under my thumb.
