Black and grey dreamcatcher tattoo with a peace symbol, hanging feathers and the words Hakuna Matata, with small coloured beads, on the top of a foot.

Dreamcatcher with feathers on the foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a peace symbol at its centre hangs from a looped ribbon, with three shaded feathers and small red, green and yellow beads beneath it. The words Hakuna Matata curve around the outer edge of the hoop in a thin, plain script. Bold black outlines and grey shading give the feathers depth, and the composition is centred on the top of a foot against a dark background.

Marta had the ovens lit by half four, and the first tins were already sweating on the rack when the delivery van's headlights slid across the shutter. Idris was late again, so she kneaded alone, the dough cool and slack under her palms, the radio murmuring the shipping forecast on the windowsill.

Above the proving cupboard hung the dreamcatcher she'd bought from a stall in Brighton the summer her mother's shop closed. Its hoop carried a sun-star with a peace sign at the heart, and the ribbon had gone soft and grey from years of steam. Idris called it daft. He had pinned a strip of paper beneath it that read Hakuna Matata in biro, a joke about the bakery running itself, which it never did.

By five the windows had turned from black to the colour of weak tea. Idris arrived with rain in his hair, swept the flour off the floor without being asked, and said he had dreamt the ovens caught fire. Marta told him that was the cupboard's fault for being too warm, not the dreamcatcher's. He grinned and flicked the little red, green and yellow beads with one finger until they swung.

She lifted the cloth from the dough and pressed a thumb into it. The dent filled back slowly, the way it should. "Proved," she said. Outside, the van pulled away with its engine coughing, and the feathers over the cupboard stirred in the draught from the door, shedding a little flour onto the cooling racks like the first snow of the year.
