Walter Pryce had been a compositor at the Clarion before the presses went quiet, and for forty years he had set type backwards in his head, letter by letter, so when his eyes went he didn't lose the trade at all. He only moved it to his fingers. The chaplain brought him a sheet of words in raised dots, and Walter ran his thumb along them the way other men run a rosary, saying each one aloud to the ceiling. Love. Dare. Live. Forgive.
Night after night the nurse on shift, a girl called Bridie Noone with cold hands and a laugh like a kettle, would sit with him once the obs were done. She couldn't read the dots. Walter couldn't see the ink. So they made a bargain. He'd read her the braille, she'd copy the word in biro on the back of her hand, and by four in the morning the pair of them had a whole alphabet of courage between them.
On the last night before he was moved to the hospice, Walter asked for the pen. He pressed his thumb to the sheet, then to Bridie's wrist, and guided the biro until she could feel the dots under her own skin. Forgive, he said. That one's for the men who set the type wrong. Then he laughed until the monitor complained, and she went off shift with the word still warm on her arm.
