Mr Okonedo kept the alphabet in a cardboard box under the bench, sheets of cartridge paper gone the colour of weak tea, and he would not let me touch it until I could draw a straight R without lifting the nib. Three winters I practised in the back room of the shop on Pinfold Street, while the rain came sideways off the moors and the gas fire ticked. Every letter on those sheets had a little triangle of black sitting low in its belly, and a diamond tucked where a crossbar ought to be. I asked once what they were for. He said a letter should have something to stand on.

Working the fascia of the chemist's on Chapel Row, I found out what he meant. The gilt on the R kept sliding off the wet ground, so I cut a notch into the bottom of its bowl, dropped in a rhombus of blue, and the whole word stopped wobbling. Mrs Achterberg from the bakery came out with flour on her forearms to watch me finish the O, and she said it looked like a window with a lamp in it.
On the last morning he unlocked the box and handed me the blank sheets. "Your turn," he said, and went to put the kettle on. I sat with the pen over the first A for a long while. Then I drew the little mountain inside it, and a diamond above, and I understood that I had been the only one ever allowed to decide what the letters were standing on.
