Breathe deep script on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two arms against a dark background. A cursive lettering tattoo reading breathe deep sits on the forearm in pale, light-coloured ink with smooth, flowing linework. A smaller dark cursive script runs across the wrist and is cropped at the edge of the frame.

I told him black shouts and gold only hums, and anyone who has stood on the prom at dusk knows which one makes people stop. So it is pale gold size, the colour you always said looked like weak tea on a white board.

I keep thinking about the morning you left for Leeds, when you stood at the gate with your bag and said I never tell you anything except to take care. You were right, and I am sorry. Your grandad came back from the sea that last winter with his chest full of cold, and he would sit on the back step counting gulls out loud. When he lost his place he simply started again from one. I never once asked him what he was counting towards.
The line I did on your wrist in the back of the van, in dark enamel, was a joke and you know it, so keep it and let the joke grow old with you. The other one I would write on the inside of your arm if you let me, in soft pale ink that hardly shows until the light is low. It is not advice. It is only what he said to the gulls before he let them go: breathe deep, love, and count again from one.
