City skyline outline on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin outline of a city skyline with several tall towers, one with a pointed spire, rising above lower blocks. The linework is fine and even, and the pale ink shows against the skin. The arm fills the centre of the black and white frame, with a dark leather surface and a white sleeve at the edges.

Ivo had traced the same skyline forty times before the council asked him to paint it once more, this time on the blank end wall of the old tram depot in Carrowby. He worked from a stepladder with a chalk line and a spirit level, and the spire of the mill tower kept coming out too short.

On the fourth morning, Marta from the archive brought him a cardboard box of photographs. Her grandfather had taken them from that same roof in 1961, when the chimney still smoked and the tallest block carried a neon clock nobody could read after dark. Ivo laid the prints across the trestle beside his drawings. The lines in the old pictures were softer and a little out of true, because the old man had held the camera with cold hands. Ivo found he trusted them more than his own measurements.
He spent the afternoon copying the old lines by eye rather than by rule. When he stepped back, the low blocks sat where they should, and the spire leaned a fraction towards the river, as it always had. Marta came to stand beside him with two cups of tea that had gone lukewarm.
"You've got the clock," she said.
He had not drawn a clock. He looked again, and there it was, a single pale circle at the top of the squat tower, faint as breath on glass. He left it where it was.
