Small anchor tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is raised against a bright window, showing a small black anchor tattoo near the back of the ankle. The anchor has a thin outline with a simple ring at the top and a curved base, drawn in a single dark ink. The skin is lit by warm sunlight, with a plain pale background and a dark shadow along the left edge.

I went down at low water yesterday with a bucket and a borrowed trowel. The shingle was full of broken shale and gulls, but I found the fluke lying face up near the groyne, pale and furred with weed, like a hand that had reached for something and given up. It was heavier than I expected. I carried it up the slipway myself, which was foolish, and stopped twice to rest it on my knee while the wind tried to take my hat.

It's on the kitchen windowsill now, where the sun comes in through the glass in the afternoon and warms it. Mrs Haldane next door says I should have left it for the council. I told her the council never cut anything deep enough to matter. Come up on the Saturday train and bring that good kettle of yours. We'll sit in the window and see whether it holds.
