The apples had gone heavy on the boughs that August, and Mara Pell walked the rows at dusk with a basket on her hip, counting the windfalls the way her grandmother had taught her, one for each owl that called from the hedge. The orchard belonged to the Vane family on paper, but the land itself belonged to the old wind, which came up from the river every evening and wanted its share.

Thirty years of quarrelling had taught the wind nothing. It slammed the shutters of the press house and tore leaves from the Bramleys, and the men of the village said the orchard was cursed. Mara did not believe in curses. She believed in ladders, and she climbed one now, to the top rung, where the fruit hung wet and green-gold in the last light.
The wind came up the slope and found her there. It pulled at her sleeves and her hair, and she felt the whole orchard lean toward her, waiting. She had nothing to offer it but the one word her mother had said when she was small and lost in the dark under the press: breathe. So she said it quietly, the way you would calm a horse, and the wind, being old and not used to being spoken to gently, stopped.
It settled in the branches. The apples held. In the morning the wind lay down in the grass like a dog, and Mara went up the ladder again, slower this time, and the fruit came down into her basket without a bruise. Some say the orchard has been still on hot evenings ever since, and that if you stand under the trees and say the word aloud, something older than you will sigh and let you be.
