Bridge, skyline and red balloon on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A suspension bridge stretches diagonally across the forearm towards a distant city skyline, with a road running along the deck and cloud banks in the sky. The shading is soft and greyscale, with dark greens and blacks in the water and roadway, and a single red balloon adds the only strong colour. The composition fills the forearm with a wide, layered landscape that leads the eye from the bridge towers to the skyline.

The wind had swung west before dawn, and Maud Ferrier knew the balloon would not make it across. Her nephew Alfie had bought it from the cart at the mainland end, a red one with a knot of ribbon at the neck, and he held the string the whole way along the causeway as if it were a lead on a dog that might bolt.

At the toll booth she poured him a cap of tea from her flask and let him stand on the step to see over the rail. The deck hummed under the lorries. Cloud rolled off the estuary in grey bands, and the city across the water stood up out of them, its towers half drowned in the morning. Alfie asked which one was the hospital. Maud said she was never quite sure. He asked which one the balloon would land on, and she told him the balloon had no interest in landing anywhere in particular, which was the whole point of balloons.

A gull came low off the wires. Alfie flinched, and the string slid through his fingers. The red shape lifted past the cable tower and drifted out over the dark water towards the skyline. He didn't cry. He watched it go with his mouth open, then turned to her with the face of someone who had been handed a secret.

Nine days later a brown envelope arrived at the booth, addressed to the lady on the bridge. Inside was a photograph of a red balloon snagged on a window ledge on the twelfth floor of an office block, its ribbon curled like a question mark, and a note in biro from a night caretaker who said he had been keeping an eye on it. Maud pinned the photograph above the flask, and every morning after that she checked the towers for it before she checked the traffic.
