Castle and labyrinth sleeve on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing a castle with several towers, a full moon, clouds and birds in the sky. The ground beneath the castle becomes a three-dimensional maze of walls, with a few birds and shapes shaded across it. The shading is mostly grey and black with soft tonal blending, while the castle windows and moon carry warm yellow and orange highlights.

The snow came early that year to the high field above Pell's farm, lying in the furrows like sheets of unbleached linen. Each morning old Mab Ferrier broke the ice on the trough with a hammer, and each morning the castle was there on the ridge beyond the ploughing, grey towers and a lamp in every window, a full moon hung over its keep like a coin nobody had spent.

Her grandson Tom said it was mist off the reservoir. He was nineteen and had no patience for stories. He took the quad up the lane to bring the ewes down before the drift closed the gate, but the ewes were not in the top field. Their tracks went round and round in the snow, a narrowing ring that led to a wall he had never seen, tall and black, with hedges beyond it turning on themselves like wool on a spindle.

He walked in at dusk with a torch and a ball of baler twine, tying one end to the gatepost. The walls were stone when he touched them and frost when he looked back. Crows watched from the hedge tops. When he called, the ewes answered from the centre, and the castle seemed nearer, its windows warm as bread. He followed the sound and the twine until his feet ached, and found them standing in a ring around a flat pale stone, where no stone should be.

He came out at the gate as the light greyed. The castle had gone back into cloud and the moon into the morning. His grandmother was at the trough with the hammer, breaking ice as if she had never stopped. 'Ewes are in,' she said, not looking up. He looked at his wrist. The twine was still knotted there, and the far end ran off across the snow toward the ridge, where a single bird lifted from a wall that had not been there yesterday.
