Celtic triquetra knot with swirls
Black and grey · Flash
The design centres on an interwoven triquetra knot drawn with smooth, bold black outlines and no shading. Long, tapering calligraphic flourishes and small dots extend outward from the knot on the upper and lower sides. The image is in black ink on a light grey-white background, with the motif placed centrally and plenty of open space around it.

By the third Saturday in October the chalk on the Palais floor had worn to nothing, and Ivy Brennan was the only one who still knew where the steps went. She knelt by the bandstand with a tin of French chalk and drew the three loops again, the way her mother had shown her: start under, come round, pass over the top and meet yourself where you began. Leonard called it the knot. The dancers called it the tangle and laughed when they lost their feet in it.

Leonard was blowing trumpet for the Hartley Quartet, and in a fortnight he would be on a train to Catterick with his kit in a sack. He came over during the interval, wiping his lip with a handkerchief. 'You've got the middle loop too fat,' he said. 'Mam says you're to stop fussing.' Ivy stood and dusted her knees. The long tails she had drawn curling out towards the pillars were meant for the ribbons the girls pinned to their shoulders on dance nights, and she had never told anyone that.
The band struck up a slow foxtrot. Leonard held out his hand, grudgingly, and she led him onto the chalk. He stumbled on the first crossing and swore, and she laughed, and then he stopped counting under his breath and simply followed her round. 'It doesn't finish,' he said, surprised, as they came back to the first loop for the third time. 'No,' said Ivy. 'That's the point of it. You can't get lost. You just keep going round until somebody lets go.'
At midnight the lights came up and the floor was scuffed grey. In the morning Ivy came back alone with the tin, knelt where the bandstand had stood, and started the knot from its first loop. Halfway round she stopped and set down one small dot, then another, and left them there for the sun to find.
