Brushstroke circle on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a loose teal arc that curves around the top of a circle, crossed by two black diagonal strokes and a long horizontal black stroke with dotted ends. The linework looks like ink brush marks, with soft shading in the teal and grey and some areas left lighter where the skin shows through. It sits on a forearm against a dark, glossy surface, with the design centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Haddow Junction has a cracked green lens, and every night for thirty-one years you have turned it up so the first train from the north sees a clean arc of light before the points clatter. Nobody at the depot asks why you bother with the old lamp when the new panel blinks red and amber on its own. You bother because your father did.

The line closes in March. A letter in the cabinet says so in the careful type of people who will not be standing on the platform when it happens. You spend the week cleaning the brass bell and oiling the lever that crosses the two diagonal tracks, the ones that once fed the quarry siding and now carry nothing but weeds and a rusted wagon with its doors hanging open.

On the last night a single lamp comes round the bend from the north, slow and low, and you see that it is not a train at all but a man on a handcart with a dog asleep in the crate. He raises his hand. You raise yours. He does not stop, and you do not ask where he is going, because the point of a junction is that somebody always passes through.

You pull the lever. The points settle with their old dull thunk, the green light sweeps out across the wet black rails, and for the length of one breath the whole valley is drawn in a single stroke, left open at the top for whoever comes next.
