Cat and infinity symbol on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo shows a cat's head with pointed ears and whiskers, where the body and tail form the loops of an infinity symbol. The linework is thin and even, with solid black fill on the tail and no shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a light-skinned forearm against a pale blue cloth background.

The ribbon shop on Mill Street had not sold a yard of anything since Tuesday, so Ada Finch was surprised to find a customer waiting when she came down with the kettle. It was Vesper, the grey tom, curled on the counter exactly where the scissors lived. Her nephew Ronnie arrived at half past nine smelling of train smoke, wanting four pounds for the fare to Liverpool and no questions about it. Ada counted coins into his palm from the tin under the till. Vesper lifted his head, whiskers bristling at the coppers, and let his tail slide free to drag a slow curve across the ledger, back over the figures she had written in April, back over the ones from the year before.
"You'll be home by Whitsun," she said. Ronnie laughed the way he always did, a half-breath that said he had heard the same thing from her every spring since he was twelve. She tried to shoo the cat off the books, but Vesper only folded himself tighter, tail meeting head, as if the shop had already decided where he ought to end.
When the bell over the door had stopped swinging, Ada took a length of blue ribbon from the drawer, tied it loosely around the cat's neck, and wrote on the back page of the ledger in pencil: Whitsun, four pounds owed. Vesper yawned, rolled once, and let the loop of his body close around the words.
