Traditional wolf heads with arrows and rose on calves
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two bold wolf heads are tattooed on the calves, each with a snarling mouth, orange eyes and dark fur. The left design sits above crossed arrows, while the right design has leaves and a red rose below it. Heavy black outlines and flat fills in red, orange and green give the tattoos a classic look, set against a plain light wall and gravel.

The second arrow went wide, as the first had, and the wolf on the stile did not even turn its head. Marjorie Pell lowered the bow and swore at it in the dialect her grandmother had used for goats. Behind her, the village of Hollin Cross was shuttering its windows one lamp at a time, and the bell at St Aldo's had gone quiet for the day.

The wolves were a pair, black-furred with ears like scorched leather, and they had been taking lambs from the Hollin fold since the thaw. Everyone said they were the same two that had come down the year the mill burned. Her brother Tobias had gone into the trees after them with the heavy crossbow and come back without it. Now she stood on the path with a quiver on her hip and a red ribbon knotted to the bowstring, because her mother said a huntress needed something to make wolves think twice.
Past the stile, in the bracken, the pair waited. The larger one lifted its muzzle and the smaller answered with a low call that set every dog in the yard barking. Marjorie walked into the clearing with her bow unstrung, which was the one thing her mother had forbidden. She sat on a fallen oak and waited. The light slid down the trunks. The wolves came closer, circled once, and then the older one sat down in the leaves like a dog at a back door.
She understood then what the fold had been: a debt. Tobias had cut the leg trap that held the she-wolf's cub two winters back, and they had kept a tally ever since. Marjorie laid the bow across her knees and left the ribbon where it was. At dawn she walked home with no lamb under her arm, and the village watching from the walls saw two grey shapes trot behind her to the edge of the trees and stop there, like sentries who had finally been paid.
