Bumblebee with dotted circle on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A realistic bumblebee is tattooed on the upper back, shown from above with its wings spread. Fine shading gives the fuzzy thorax and the translucent wings depth, and a ring of small dots surrounds the insect. Yellow and black ink form the body, with grey shading on the wings and legs.

Nell had the hatch propped with a boot when the bumblebee came in over the cabin roof, low and heavy, bumping at the brass lamp as if it had business there. The barge was moored below Sawley lock with the engine ticking as it cooled, and the towpath smelled of cut meadow and diesel. She let it be. Her father always said bees knew the weather before the kettle did, and this one was fat and slow, which meant rain by teatime.

It walked the wet rail the way a man walks a pier he has paid for. Her father had painted that rail blue the spring her mother took the car to Leeds and didn't come back for the rest of the summer, and the paint still lifted at the corners where a bee could catch a foot. He had never once swatted a bumble. "They're not in a hurry," he used to say, "so why should you be?"
Mr Oddie from the lock came along the bank at half four with his cap in his hand and a sack of windfalls for the ducks. He stopped at the gunwale, looked at the bee, and said the hedgerows were early this year and the bumbles were mad for the clover. Nell said she supposed they were.
When the first drops hit the roof, the bee lifted off the lamp and made three slow loops above the tiller, round and round, as if tracing something only it could see. Then it slipped out through the gap in the hatch. Nell took the logbook from its hook and, under the day's date, put a single small dot, and then, because it seemed right, another beside it.
