Burritos spelt across knuckles
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists face the camera, with the word BURRITOS tattooed in capital letters across the eight finger segments, one letter per finger section. The letters are outlined and filled in grey-blue ink with some shading, and faint tattoo lines are visible on the backs of the hands. The background is softly blurred dark fabric, which keeps the focus on the hands.

The van had been parked at the lay-by outside Llandeilo since six, and by half nine the queue of lorry drivers stretched past the bins. Mo Hadley, who had cooked the same steak and bean wraps for eleven years, lost his temper with the generator and then lost a bet to his nephew Tomos about whether a word could fit across eight fingers. Tomos said it could. Mo said no word worth eating would ever be that daft.

Gwen Price, the only tattooist in the county who kept her shop open after the pubs shut, owed Mo a favour for a tortilla press he had lent her in March. She laid the stencil out on her counter with her tongue between her teeth, sorting the capitals into order. The letters had old-fashioned serifs like little feet, and she kept asking whether he really wanted them grey. Mo said grey was what the van looked like in the rain.
It hurt less than the generator. Tomos held the torch and counted the letters aloud, B, U, R, R, I, T, O, S, and at the final S Mo started laughing, the needle slipped, and Gwen swore in Welsh at the ceiling. By the time they drove back to the lay-by the sky was pale over the hills, and a driver in a hi-vis jacket was waiting with a tenner and a hungry face.
Mo rested his hands on the steering wheel and looked at them in the mirror. Nobody in the queue ever asked what the word meant. They paid, ate, and drove off thinking it was the name of a band. Tomos wanted a second word for the other hand. Mo told him to wait until someone could spell it without help.
