Two clenched fists show black lettering on the knuckles spelling STARS and WARS, with a green leaf and flower tattoo on the back of one hand.

STARS WARS knuckle lettering

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two clenched fists are shown close up, with the letters S, T, A, R, S on one set of knuckles and W, A, R, S on the other. The lettering is solid black with bold, slightly angular strokes, and a small green leaf and pink flower design sits on the back of the right hand. The shallow focus and soft natural light keep the knuckle lettering sharp while the background and a coloured arm tattoo at the left edge fall away.

Dear Hettie,

The pass has been shut three days now and Mr Dunmore has taken to drinking his tea standing at the window, as if the snow might lift if he stares hard enough. Your brother has spent the same three days arguing with him. Tom says the stars are clear enough to cross by midnight, and Dunmore says the stars are a story told by men who want their mules back on the road. Last night it came to a fist, or rather two, which is how Tom settles most things.

He held both hands up across the table, the lettering turned out toward the stove. STARS on one, WARS on the other. "Read it right, Dunmore," he said, "and you'll see the whole argument is in the spelling." Dunmore read it. Then he read it again, slower, with his lips moving, and went very quiet.

Here is what I think he saw. Take the S from the first fist and set it in front of WARS, and you have SWARS, which is what the drift has done to the north wall. Read the letters the other way and STAR sits inside STARS like a lamp in a box. Tom has never once in his life explained a joke he could simply make.

We cross at first light, all four of us and the two mules, with the lantern hung from the sledge. Dunmore has agreed to lead on the condition that Tom walks at the back where he can keep an eye on him. Write soon, and tell Mother the mules are fine.

Yours, Nell
