Tiger tattoo on a raised hand

Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A hand is raised against a dark grey background, with a blue and white flame flickering around the middle finger. The back of the hand carries a bold traditional tiger head with black outlines, orange fur, a yellow eye and green shading, and the words Diamonds are forever run in black script down the side of the hand. Small black tattoos sit on the fingers, and the blurred edge of another tattooed arm appears at the lower right.

The torch on the bench had been playing up since Tuesday, so I had to hold the flame to the stone twice before it caught. "Diamonds are forever," he said, nodding at the card tucked in the lid. "My nan used to say that. She was wrong about most things, but not that, apparently."

I turned the stone under the lamp. The blue fringe of the flame licked around it and the white centre hissed where it touched the setting, and the stone stayed dull as a bottle end. I didn't need the loupe to tell me. Glass doesn't take heat like that, and neither does a lie for long. He watched my face the way he might watch a dealer shuffle cards, and I suspect he already knew.

I could have told him the truth and sent him off into the rain with nothing. Instead I counted out forty pounds, which was twice what the setting was worth, and wrote the ticket in my neatest hand. He didn't argue. When the door shut behind him, the bell gave its small tired ring. I put the ring in the tray with the others, the tiger facing outward, and it was the only thing in the shop that had never once pretended to be more than it was.
