Botanical leaves and flower on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and wrist rest on a pale floral quilt, with a tattoo of large leaves and a rose-like bloom shaded in soft grey and black. Fine linework outlines the leaves, while the bloom and foliage use gradual tonal shading. Feathery shapes are visible near the lower edge, and the warm, slightly faded lighting gives the photo a vintage tone.

Pell Hanna kept the light on Scarrow Head for thirty-one years, and every spring she carried a bucket of seawater up the rock to feed the one rose that would grow there. Her mother had planted it the year she came out to the rock as a bride. She said the place needed something that did not mind being shouted at by the wind. The bloom opened pale and went dark at the edges by midsummer, the way the sea did before a blow.

The birds came to the lamp on the nights of the autumn gales. They struck the glass and dropped onto the gallery rail, and Pell swept them into a sack and let them go at first light. Gulls, mostly, and once a swift that had come a thousand miles to die on a lighthouse. She kept the feathers that fell and tucked them under the rose's stones, because her mother had said a plant feeds on whatever the sky gives up.
The winter the lamp failed, the rose put out a single leaf as broad as a hand. Pell climbed the stair with the spare mantle and found the boy from the mainland who had come over with the supply boat, asleep against the lens with his cold hands folded beneath his chin. She did not wake him. She trimmed the wick herself, and when the beam swept out over the water it caught a grey feather lying on the gallery rail, lifted by the draught, turning slowly as if it had somewhere to be.
