World map outline on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a hand in a loose fist with dark painted nails and a thin ring on one finger. A fine line outline of the world map wraps across the inner wrist and lower forearm, showing the continents in single-weight black linework. The plain white background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the hand.

Dear Ada, Your father's old chart case came back from the bindery on Tuesday with a note saying the continents had lifted off the tracing paper too faintly to print. So I sat up with the lamp and a fine nib and drew them by hand, every headland from memory, the way he taught us on the slate roof above the net loft.

I started with Iceland because it was easy to find, then Newfoundland, which I kept getting wrong until I remembered you saying it looked like a dog asleep. The hardest was the Horn. You always said it was the only place where the land gave up and the sea won, and I did it three times before the line sat right. Mrs Penhallow from the chandlery came up to look and said the sea seemed to be moving, which I suppose it was, under the lamp.

The map is going to Tobias at the cooper's shop on the quay to hang behind the till, where the sailors can point at where they have been and argue about it over their pints. I drew the coastline of Saltcombe in the top corner as well, no bigger than a fingernail, so anyone looking can find us.

Come home when the Horn is behind you. The ink is still wet along the last margin, so don't lean on it. Your loving sister, Nell.
