Cabin, pine trees and UFO on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A small scene shows a red log cabin with a lit window and smoking chimney beside three pine trees, with a silver flying saucer above emitting an orange beam. The design uses bold black outlines with flat, solid fills in red, green, yellow and grey, set on a light patch of ground. It is photographed against a blue backdrop, with the tattoo sitting on the outer calf.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By half two the corridor lights had dropped to their night setting, and Mr Pryce in bay four was awake again, pressing the call bell to ask whether the lamp in the car park was on or off. I told him it was off. He said it was on, and that it was orange, and that he had seen a thing like it once above the pines behind his father's cabin in Galloway, the summer of 1961, when the chimney was still smoking and his mother was calling everyone in for tea.

I didn't believe him, but I went to the end window anyway, because a healthcare assistant on nights ends up doing things like that. Beyond the bins and the staff cars there was a strip of rough grass, then a line of conifers black against a sky the colour of wet slate. Nothing hung over them. There was only one lit window somewhere up the hill and a thread of grey steam from the boiler house, rising straight because there was no wind.

When I came back he had his glasses on and one hand flat on the blanket, as if he were keeping it down. 'Put it in the log,' he said. 'Lights over the pines, quarter past two, and I'm not making it up.' I wrote it under the bed numbers in my neatest capitals, the way the sister likes, and didn't think about it again until six, when the day team came on and bay four was stripped to the mattress.

The sheets were folded in a square at the foot of the bed. Under my entry, in pencil and in shaky capitals I didn't recognise, someone had added a line: LIGHTS CONFIRMED. HOME TO THE CABIN.
