Cabin with pine trees on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A log cabin with a shingled roof, two red brick chimneys and smoke rising into a starry sky, set among dark pine trees. The linework is bold with heavy black shading and grey tones on the roof, trees and ground, and small red accents on the chimneys and at the lower edge. The photo is shown twice side by side, with the tattoo filling most of the frame on the forearm.

The snow had come early to the winter quarters at Calder Fell, and by the third week of November the big top lay folded under it like a sleeping animal. Nell Hartigan kept the cabin stove lit from five in the morning until the stars came out, because the lorry men had told her a smoking chimney was the only thing they could see from the road after dark. Nobody else was left to be seen.

The company had thinned through the autumn. The lion went first, to a zoo in Yorkshire that paid for his keep and nothing more. The Flying Mancinis took a contract on a cruise ship out of Southampton, and the clowns scattered to council jobs in the Midlands. Only Nell remained, with the ledger, a wardrobe of sequins gone green at the seams, and a letter from Silas Vane, who had written from Dublin that he was selling the wagons and would come for her in spring if the bank allowed it.
She sewed by the lamp in the evenings, mending a red jacket for a ringmaster who would never wear it again. Outside, the pines creaked and let their snow fall in soft thumps. Around ten she went out with the shovel to clear the step and found fresh tyre marks on the track, deep and square, and her heart did something foolish. A box van idled at the gate, its hazards blinking orange against the white.
The driver leaned out and asked for the road to the motorway. He'd been lost for an hour, he said, until he saw the smoke from three miles off and took it for a village. Nell looked up at the chimney, still breathing its grey thread into the stars, and felt the old pull of a crowd turning towards a light. 'Then you'll want tea,' she said. 'We've been a town all winter.'
