Geometric houses forearm sleeve
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the forearm with angular, cubist-style buildings, rooftops, brick courses and small square windows. Linework is combined with dense dotwork stippling and solid black fills to shade the planes and roofs. The image is a three-panel composition showing the same forearm from the front, side and back, all in black and grey ink.

Margaret had measured the back wall of the allotment four times before she believed the numbers. From the gate the rooftops of Harrow Court stood square and sensible, brick on brick, but from the water butt the same houses seemed to have folded inward, their gables swinging out over the cabbages like the lids of open boxes. She held the tape taut against the fence post and read it aloud to nobody. Forty feet. It should have been forty feet.

Her nephew Tomas, who did something with drawings for the council, came on Sunday with a flask and a roll of tracing paper. He pinned the sheets to the shed door and went over the terrace with a soft pencil, shading the roofs black where the light fell and leaving the window squares blank. "It's not wrong," he said. "It's just looking from three places at once."
Margaret thought about the upstairs window at number nine, the one with the square of gaslight her husband had kept burning every winter after he left for the docks and never came back. On the paper it sat in a different plane from the bricks beneath it, shifted a little to the left, as if the house had turned to see who was in the garden.
She planted her beans that week in a long straight row, and every evening after that she checked the roofs against the tape. They were moving, or she was, and she stopped minding which. The last thing she did before the light went was to wave at the window, which was what you did with a neighbour, even one who had been seen from three sides at once.
