Church, mountains and handshake on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo on the upper arm shows a church with a tall spire and a smaller house set in front of mountains. A handshake sits at the lower edge of the design, drawn with fine hatching and stippled shading. The composition is a rounded vignette filled with dense linework, with the shading giving depth to the mountains and building walls.

The wall had been moving for thirty years, and nobody in Sankt Oswin could say which way it had gone last. Ulrich Brand swore it had crept three paces onto his meadow in the night. Josef Mayr swore Brand had shifted the stones himself, one at a time, with a barrow and a grudge. By the spring of the great thaw they had stopped speaking, and the priest had given up asking them to sit together at Mass.

It was the bell that finally brought them to the wall. The tower had cracked in January, and the old bell had to go down the mountain road on a cart to be recast in the valley. Mayr offered his horse. Brand offered his shoulders. Neither would be seen taking help from the other, so they stood either side of the boundary stones and argued about who should lift first, while the cart driver smoked and watched the clouds come down over the peaks.

In the end it was the mason's boy, Rudi, who put a foot on the wall and said the bell was lighter than either of them thought. They lifted it together, grunting, faces an arm's length apart, and when it was on the cart Brand wiped his palm down his trousers and held it out. Mayr looked at the hand for a long time. Then he took it, and the grip was hard enough to hurt.

Next morning the cart rolled away with the bell wrapped in sacking. The meadow lay exactly where it had always lain, and nobody bothered to measure it again. Brand said nothing about the wall. Mayr said nothing about the weather. They walked up the church path together, and the stones stayed where they fell.
