Potted cactus and flowers on a lower leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A green cactus with pink flowers grows out of a striped pink and purple pot, set against an orange circle. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat solid fills in green, pink, purple and yellow. Below the pot, a red flower, blue blossoms and purple buds with leaves extend diagonally down the leg.

Dear Mags, you'll not believe what came home in the van with me. Ronnie won him at the coconut shy in Clacton, which I still say was a fix, because nobody wins a pot plant off a bloke with a moustache unless the bloke wants them to. This one has three arms and a bad attitude, and he has been sulking since Tuesday.

We have been on the road since April, in Dad's old van with the bench seat and the gas ring that only lights on the third go. The cactus rode up front on my knee, wrapped in a tea towel, its spines pricking through the cotton every time we hit a pothole on the coast road. Ronnie says he's the only one of us who ever gets a seat with a view. That orange sun painted on his pot got us through a wet week at Weymouth when the rides shut and the takings were a joke.

Last Saturday the generator packed in halfway through the Ferris wheel. While the lads swore at the cables, I sat on the caravan steps and watched the dusk go orange over the dodgems. The cactus had a fresh pink bloom on the tallest arm, the size of a thumbprint. Stupid thing. I laughed so hard I had to put my tea down.

Anyway, we're in Margate till the end of the month. Come and see him. Bring your good scissors, he needs a haircut.

Love, Jo
