Desert pyramids with UFO and palm tree

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows striped pyramids and dark mountain peaks on a desert ground with dashed lines, flanked by a cactus on the left and a palm tree on the right. Above them sit a crescent moon, a ringed planet, a flying saucer and small stars. The design uses outlined shapes with solid black fills and fine dashed detail, all in black ink on skin.

Sit down by the oven, love, and mind the flour on the step. My grandmother kept the ovens at the bakery on Dune Lane, in a town where sand crept under the doors every morning, and she always said the sky was never so honest as it was in the hour before the bread went in. That was the hour she first saw the saucer hanging above the palm tree by the well, its little ring of light turning slow as a spoon in tea.

It came down low, humming the way the fridge hums in the back room, and a small grey man stepped out with his hands in his pockets. He asked, very politely, for a loaf of barley flatbread. He paid her with a coin that had a thin ring round its middle, like the planet on the wall of the schoolhouse. She had nothing to give him but yesterday's loaves, so she gave him the best of them, because he looked as if he had come a very long way and the ovens were still warm.

He tore the bread in two, ate a corner standing by the cactus, and said it tasted of the ground that grew it. Then he asked how far it was to the dark mountains past the dunes. She told him they had been there longer than the town. He nodded and said, yes, his people had measured them, and that the striped stone pyramid beyond the ridge was the one thing they could never quite get the angles to agree on.

By the time the first grey light came over the roofs, the saucer had gone, and the palm tree by the well had dropped a single frond on the step. My grandmother kept it pressed in her Bible. So when you open the shutter this morning, look at the sky before you look at the bread, and see whether the moon is still hanging there over the ridge.
