Colourful leg tattoos above green trainers
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A top-down photograph of two legs in green canvas trainers with orange laces, standing on a grey concrete surface. The left lower leg carries a dense tattoo with colourful designs in pink, red and green tones. The right leg has smaller black tattoos near the ankle and shin, with the hairy skin and dark jeans cuffs visible.

Mrs Okafor's lift has been broken since the week the boiler went, so I take the stairs to the fourteenth floor with a carrier bag of bread rolls in one hand and my brother's old green canvas trainers in the other. Dev left them under the bench on our balcony in August, the orange laces still knotted where he'd swapped them for the bright ones from the market. Nothing gets claimed on Ferncliffe House. Things just wait for you to notice them.

The walkway outside flat 61 has a crack down its middle that the council filled once and then forgot. Every morning the pigeons queue along it as if they're waiting for a bus. I stand there with the trainers and remember the summer Dev showed me how to tie a double knot so the laces wouldn't loosen on the stairs, how he tapped each eyelet with his thumb before pulling tight. He said a good knot was a promise you kept for a whole day.
Last Thursday a boy from the top floor knocked and asked if I'd seen a spare pair of trainers, the kind with the white rubber toe. His own had split and he had an interview in Croydon. I handed them over and he sat on my step to put them on, pulling each lace sharp as a sailor. He didn't ask why they fitted so well, and I didn't tell him they'd been waiting.
When he stood up he looked taller, and the bench was only a bench again. I went back inside and rang Dev, who said to keep the bread rolls. I did, all fourteen floors of them, and the lift still didn't work.
