Wildflower sprig on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprig of wildflowers with a single open bloom, slender stems and several narrow leaves is tattooed on the ankle. The linework is thin and single-needle in black ink, with light hatching only in places and no solid fill. The design is centred on the ankle against plain pale skin, with a white trainer and a hand adjusting the shoe at the edge of the frame.

Her husband Tobias thought it foolish. The lamp needed trimming and the fog bell needed oiling, and the nearest village was three miles of bog away by donkey. But when the fog came in thick as wool that October and a fishing boat from Lowmarsh lost its bearings, it was the single pale bloom on the headland that the skipper saw, a small dark sprig against the grey, and he steered for it the way a man steers for a lamp.

The wife said nothing of it. She went out the next morning with her shawl pulled tight and found the stem bent but unbroken, two narrow leaves still green where the salt had tried to take them. She pressed the flower flat between the pages of the log book, beside the record of every ship that had passed safe.

Years later the log was read aloud in the chapel on Lowmarsh quay, and the old men would point at the pressed bloom and nod. Nobody could tell them what the flower was called. They only knew that it came back each spring whether anyone knelt to it or not, and that the boats still turned their bows towards it when the fog came down.
