Stay and Gold script ankle tattoos
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the lower legs and ankles of a person wearing rolled-up dark jeans and black canvas trainers on a pavement in low, warm sunlight. On the left ankle is the word Stay and on the right ankle is the word Gold, both in black script with decorative swirls and tails. The lines are solid and dark with minimal shading, and the composition is in full colour only from the warm sun flare, with the ink itself in black.

Stay, she said, tapping the first word. He laughed, because she had been saying it all summer, every time his father's van rattled up the hill to collect him. The van was coming on Monday. Nell's mother had gone the same way years before, and nobody in the village said her name at supper any more.
Gold, Tomasz said, nodding at the second word she had carved while he wasn't looking. That's what you'll be when you come back, a stranger with money and a city voice. She didn't answer. The sun slid behind the breakwater, and the whole wall flared, the letters glowing like something spilled.
On Monday the van went up the hill without him. That evening Nell walked down to the wall and found a third word cut beneath the others, small and careful, in a hand she knew better than her own. Back. She ran her thumb along the groove until the light was gone.
