Sun over mesas on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large sun with radiating lines sits at the top of the design, framed by flat-topped rock formations on either side and a winding path running between them. The linework uses fine outlines with hatched and stippled shading on the cliffs, path and ground, with small spiky plants at the bottom edge. The design is entirely black and grey and sits within a square boundary on the upper arm.

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the guy ropes. I'll tell you about the road that runs between the two red teeth of rock, because the man who painted my wagon's sign swore he'd walked it, and he never lied about anything except his age.

Nobody in the valley could say how far the path went. Ma Dorrit kept the cookhouse at the Ashby fair the summer the heat sat on us for six weeks, and she told the children the sun was a lamp hung by a giant who'd forgotten to take it down. Her youngest, Tobias, didn't believe a word. He took a canvas bag, two oranges and a tin whistle, and set off up the track while the sun was still a white coin over the mesas.
He walked until the cliffs stood as tall as chapel walls on either side, and the rays came down so thick you could have hung washing on them. By noon the agave at the edge of the track were spiked and grey with dust. He ate one orange, then the other, and blew the whistle at the lizards to keep his nerve up.
At the top of the path there was no giant, only a flat stone table and a woman sitting on it with her hat across her knees. She didn't look up. She said, "You're late for the last show," and pointed back the way he'd come. He turned, and there was the fairground below him, small as a toy, every light lit. The sun had sunk behind the rock and lay along the path like a ribbon of gold, and it was pointing home.
