Traditional style tattoo on a forearm showing a campfire, tent, pine trees and mountains under a moon, with the words WE COULD BE ANYWHERE arched above.

Campfire and tent camping scene on forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The design shows a night camping scene inside an oval: a campfire with orange flames, an orange tent, a row of pine trees, and mountains under a crescent moon and dark clouds. The words WE COULD BE ANYWHERE curve across the top, and a yellow flower with green leaves sits at the base. Bold black outlines, solid fills and mixed colour give it a classic traditional look.

Dermot had the tent out of the van before the solicitor's car cleared the cattle grid, shaking the damp canvas loose over the wet grass of Long Acre field. The notice on the gate said CLOSED FROM MONDAY in his own handwriting, and he had decided that if the place was going to belong to someone else by breakfast, he would at least sleep one last night in it.

His sister Nell came up the track at dusk with a cool box and two bags of charcoal she had no business buying. She did not ask whether he wanted help. She knelt, knocked the pegs in with the heel of her boot, and built the fire the way their father had, a cone of kindling inside a ring of creek stones. The flames caught fast and orange, and the pines along the ridge turned black against a sky still streaked green at the edges.

They ate sausages burnt outside and cold in the middle, and watched the moon lift over the fells, thin as a paring. Nell said the tent looked like a lantern someone had left on the grass. Dermot said they had pitched it in that exact spot every August for thirty years, and she said that was the point, and he couldn't argue with that.

Later, when the fire had sunk to a red eye, he lay on his back and listened to the beck. Nell said, half asleep, "Feels like we could be anywhere." He thought about the new owners' plans for glamping pods and a gym, and the sound of water running on underneath all of it. "We could," he said. "Go on, then. Pick one." She didn't answer, and he understood she was already picking, which was as close to a plan as either of them was going to get.
