Hand holding an eye flower on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with a cuff at the wrist grips the stem of a large scalloped flower, with a stylised eye at its centre surrounded by radiating lines. Two leaves extend from the stem to the right. The bold outlines are filled with fine dotwork shading, and the image is entirely black and grey on pale skin against a dark background.

Dear Tom,

The stall on the down platform has a new bloom in the bucket, a great scalloped dahlia Mrs Pryce brought in from her allotment, and I've been standing it in the window to keep the 6.40 looking my way. You'll laugh, but the middle of it has a face in it, a little eye with rays coming off it like the sun on a church clock. Mr Dunn says it's bad luck to sell a flower that's watching you, so I've kept it back for the signalman's wife.
Yesterday a lad with a carpetbag asked me to hold the stems while he counted out his coins. His hand was steady and he wore a cuff of brass buttons at the wrist, the way the porters did before the war. When he let go, the bloom tipped and I caught it against my palm. Two leaves came away from the stalk, so I've pressed them in the back of Dad's old timetable for you.
The eye keeps looking down the line at the points. Every time a train slows for the junction it seems to settle on the lamp at the far end, and I think of you on the night run north, watching that same red light come up out of the dark.
Come home at Easter, or at least write. The flowers won't last past the frost, but I'd rather you saw the eye before it shuts.
Your loving sister, Nell
