The crabs came up the causeway the night my father stopped trusting the tide tables. I found him on the seaward wall of Harrow Keep at two in the morning, a dead torch in his fist, watching the flats fill with a slow scuttling pale as bone. He said the sea had been carrying them for a week and they were walking inland to die beneath the ruins, the way they always had. I told him the tables said nothing about crabs. He said the tables had been written by men who had never once been out after the spring flood.

Cancer was climbing over the broken gatehouse then, a loose spill of stars that Gran used to call the crab's footprints. We counted seven from the battlements, bright as sequins on dark cloth, and between them the sea had left its own marks, swirled sand where the water had turned twice and gone back. My father traced them with a finger on the stone, the way you might trace a route to a place you had promised never to visit.
Near the chapel steps I found a crab the size of a dinner plate, its shell pale and pitted with a pattern like a grinning face. It did not bite. It lifted one claw and held it there, the way a clerk raises a hand to stop a queue, then turned and walked back down toward the water. I followed it until the stars were swallowed by sea mist and the only light was the lamp in my own hand.
At dawn my father was asleep against the wall with his coat over his face. I wrote the crab's path in the margin of the tide table, beside a line that read Low water, 04:12, and underlined it twice. Some things only come up with the tide if you are patient enough to walk out and meet them.
