Small finger tattoos of moon, crystal and eye

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows four small tattoos on fingers: a unicorn horn with a pink bow, a blue crystal, a purple orb with an eye, and black outlined designs of a triple moon, a crescent moon and a pentacle. The top three tattoos are filled with pastel blue, pink and purple shading, while the lower two are black linework with no fill. Each tattoo sits alone on a finger against a dark background, with the nails visible in some shots.

"Put that back before the eye opens," Mab said, not looking up from her knitting. Oda had the glass orb cupped in both hands, its milky purple bulk cool as a stone from the river, and the painted eye in its centre stared at her with the patient disdain of a cat. "It only watches the ones who have something to hide."

"It's glass, Gran. Glass doesn't watch."

Mab set her needles down and held out a hand. Her fingers were ringed in thin silver, each band hung with a tiny charm: a crescent, a blue crystal, a star inside a circle. Oda had thought them trinkets until the winter the fever came up the valley and Mab walked every lane at night with a lantern on a hook, knocking at doors and telling families which of their children would see the spring.

Oda did not give up the orb. She carried it down to the harbour wall that evening, where Tobias Greave was mending a net and pretending not to watch the window of the chandler's shop. She had a question and a shilling's worth of nerve. The eye blinked once, slow and damp, and the purple went dark as a plum. Inside it she saw the moon, full and pale, rising over a field she did not know, with a horn of pale light tangled in the hedge below it. Tobias was nowhere in it.

She understood then that the orb had never shown anyone anything they did not already carry. She walked home with it under her shawl, let herself in, and set it back on the shelf between the crystal and the moon-disc. Then she took the pink ribbon from her workbox, tied a neat bow around the filed narwhal tooth that hung beside them, and waited for her grandmother to say something she would not be able to answer.
