Giraffes, hearts, clover and script tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A four-panel collage of tattoo photographs. Two forearms show matching black outline giraffes with a small red heart, and two wrists show watercolour hearts in pink, blue, green and yellow. Fine black line clover designs appear on a wrist beside metal bracelets, and a script quote reading I am because you are sits on shoulder blades.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The rains had failed for three seasons when the two giraffes came down off the ridge, one tall and grey at the muzzle, the other younger and still learning where her long legs ended. Ama Sefu, who kept goats below the dam wall, said they walked like people who had argued about the route and lost. The pan was cracked like old plates, and the only water left lay in a hollow under the acacias, thick and brown.

The young one went down into the mud first and sank to her knees. She pulled, and the mud pulled back. The older giraffe did not run for the trees. She lowered her head, slowly, until her neck lay across the soft ground like a bridge, and she held her chin still while the younger one leaned her weight against it. Ama's grandson counted seven breaths before the young one was free and drinking. He said afterwards that the older one never once lifted her head to look at the sky.
The rain came in the second week of the next season, grey at first and then all at once, so hard the children ran out of the school with their slates held over their heads. Ama's grandson was the first to dip his fingers in the wash running off the schoolroom wall. He painted a small heart on his wrist with blue and yellow, and then his sister painted one beside it, and by evening half the village had red and green hearts on their arms.
In the morning the pan was full. Ama walked out to see, and at the edge of the hollow she found two long shapes pressed into the wet clay, side by side, with a small round puddle where their necks had met. The water had already begun to take the shape of them, and she stood there a while before she called the children to see.
