Mr Pell used to say a flourish was a promise you made to the eye, and you kept it or you left the trade. I was fourteen that summer and had spent weeks grinding ochre in a tin behind the chandler's on Stoke Quay, copying his capitals onto offcuts of board until my wrists ached and my knuckles went white with size.

The commission that autumn was for the Lantern Café on the front, a fat gilt script over the door. Mrs Okonedo wanted her late husband's name worked into the swash of the first letter, and she wanted it done before the Saturday crowds. I laid the gold thin, loaded the brush, and wrote the whole word in one breath, the way Pell had shown me, never lifting at the joins. When I climbed down the ladder he was sitting on an upturned crate with his pipe unlit, and he wasn't looking at the sign at all.

"Wrong way round," he said.

I looked up. The curl at the tail of the swash ran under the bowl instead of over it. Nobody walking past would have seen it. Nobody but the man who had taught me, and the woman whose husband's name now lay crooked above her door.

I expected him to take the brush off me. Instead he handed me a clean rag and the gold pot. "Leave it," he said. "Let her see where your hand went." The next morning the sun came low off the water and caught the wrong curl, so that for one minute the whole street lit up around it like a thing somebody had decided to keep.
