Carnation and hand in dotwork
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A carnation bloom with a leafy stem is held between the fingers of a hand, which has a cuff with a scalloped dotted edge at the wrist. Bold black outlines define the flower, leaves and hand, with grey shading in the petals and stippled dotwork texture on the hand. The design is shown in black and grey on smooth skin against a plain light background.

Ada had the carnation in her fist before the boats were past the breakwater, its stem already bruised where she had gripped it. Her mother's knitted cuff was still buttoned over the sleeve of her oilskin, the scalloped edge dark with fish oil from the crates she had carried down at five. Behind them the harbour wall was thinning to a grey line, and the Mary Ann Rose rolled under their feet like a tired horse.

Her uncle Tomasz had bought the flower from the stall by the chandler's, paying with coins he had been saving for a new gaff. "For the captain's daughter," he said, though nobody in Hollin Bay believed a fishwife's son could get a girl's name right. Ada had taken it because it was easier than arguing, and because the bloom was the colour of the Gannet's hull after rain.
Out past the Skerries the swell came up under them in long, patient lifts. The nets went over the side in a rhythm that needed no talking. Ada worked the winch, counted the floats as they vanished, and lifted the carnation now and then to the light so its pale edges showed against the grey water, the way the printed fish-price card showed its ink.
When they hauled back at dusk, the net was heavy with herring and one strand of blue twine had wound itself around the flower's stem. Tomasz laughed, long and rough, and said the sea had taken a liking to her. Ada didn't answer. She only tucked the carnation into the cuff of her oilskin, where the scalloped edge held it steady all the way back to the lit windows of the quay.
