Carousel horse with cupcakes
Colour · Flash
A carousel horse rears up on a golden pole, with a black mane and tail, a patterned saddle and a pale grey body. Two cupcakes with sprinkles sit in the upper right, surrounded by small stars and dots. The soft, outlined rendering uses pastel blues, pinks, purples and greens on a plain background.

The horse would not go round until someone had iced the cakes, and nobody in Scallow Bay could agree whether that was a rule or a superstition. Dilys Freeth, who had run the pier carousel for forty years, swore it was the horse's own idea. She had tied a paper bag of sprinkles to the golden pole on the first Monday of August, and the grey mare with the black mane had stamped until someone brought her a cake.

This year it was Tobias, the baker's boy from the front, who climbed the pole with a tray balanced on one arm. The cupcakes were lavender and mint, piped high and dusted with silver stars that caught the sun off the sea. He set them on the saddle cloth, where the pink and green pattern had faded to the colour of old boiled sweets, and the mare lowered her head and sniffed, pleased, as if she had been waiting all winter.
Then the organ wheezed, the platform lurched, and the whole carousel began to turn. Tobias should have jumped. Instead he stayed on the pole, one hand round the brass, watching the cakes stay put while the painted horses rose and fell around them. The sprinkles trembled but did not fall. Out past the railings the sea went flat and bright, and a gull hung on the wind as if it too wanted a turn.
When the ride stopped, Dilys was waiting with her hands on her hips. The cupcakes were gone. In their place sat a single silver star, pressed flat into the leather like a coin. "She'll want the same next year," Dilys said, and Tobias, who had never once believed in anything, found he was already counting the months.
