Four cupcake designs with script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black and grey flash sheet showing four cupcake drawings, each topped with a cherry or strawberry and decorated with dots or sprinkles. Each cupcake is paired with flowing script lettering in ornamental and shaded styles, including the phrases Sweet Dream and Eat Me. The line work is fine and sketched with soft shading on the paper cases and frosting, and the designs are arranged across the sheet with plenty of white space.

The flour gets into everything on the Marigold, into the seams of the lockers and the grain of your knuckles, and by the time the boat reaches Lechlade you have stopped trying to brush it off. Your uncle painted the board above the hatch the summer before he died, two curls of script that read EAT ME in letters so fancy the lock keepers always misread them as a dare. You never corrected him. You bake under it anyway, twelve cases to a tray, cherries bought by the bag from a grower at Eynsham who will only sell you the ones with stalks still on.

The trouble with a narrowboat kitchen is the weather. Damp gets into the sprinkles and they clump, and the frosting slumps if the sun comes round the willows too early. So you work at night, the stove ticking, the canal flat and black, and you pipe each swirl the way he taught you, wrist loose, pulling up at the top so the peak stands like a held breath. You place the cherries last. One always leans. You leave that one for yourself.
On the third Saturday a boy with a bicycle stopped on the towpath and asked what the sign meant. You told him it meant what it said. He frowned, shook his head, and asked whether the cakes were sweet or only looked it. You went below, found the stencil brushes, and by dawn the board read SWEET DREAM in the same looping hand, a little crooked at the D. The boy came back at nine with his mother and two coins in his fist, and he ate his cupcake slowly, licking the frosting off the paper, watching you the whole time as if you might still take it away.
