The barge is moored below the lock at Shardlow and I have been sat on the cabin step since six, watching the water go brown and gold under the bridge. You will say I should have written sooner, and you will be right. Dad's cough got worse before the frost and Mum wanted the ropes checked, so I did the checking, and the blue paint on the gunwales is flaking the way his did at the end.

Something odd happened on Tuesday. A butterfly came off the reeds and settled on the tiller while I was threading the stern line, and it stayed there the whole run to the weir, opening and closing its wings as if it had paid the fare. I did not shoo it. Mrs Pearce from the next boat laughed and said it was a sign, and I told her signs were for people with nothing better to do.

Here is the thing I have not said to anyone. When Dad asked me last month whether I was going to marry Callum or leave him, I said I could not give him the answer he wanted, and he said, Nell, love me for who I am, and I did not know how to reply. I still don't. But I think he meant it as a kindness, and I am starting to suspect I have spent years trying to be somebody else's idea of a daughter.

So come up at Easter. Bring the good tea and the proper cake, not the dry stuff from the petrol station. The butterfly may still be about.
