Fine line script tattoo reading all my loving in faded blue-grey ink on the side of a torso.

Script reading all my loving on the side

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a handwritten script phrase, all my loving, with the words written in one continuous flowing line. The linework is thin and even, and the ink appears faded and blue-grey against pale skin. The tattoo sits across the frame on the side of the body, with a partial view of another area at the right edge.

Dear Tom, the lift is out again, so I am writing this on the landing with my back against the cold tiles, waiting for young Okafor's boy to fetch the post from the box at the bottom. Nine floors is nothing when you're twenty, the council told us so in the brochure, but the brochure never mentioned the wind that comes whistling up the stairwell in February and gets into the bones of the building.

Your letter came on Tuesday, the Hull postmark smudged almost to nothing. You say the trawler is short of hands again and that the skipper has promised you a proper bunk this time, with a porthole you can see the gulls through. I read it three times at the kitchen table until the kettle boiled dry and the whole flat smelt of scorched tin. Your mother says you'll come back with money and a face like a fisherman. I told her you'll come back with stories, and she said that was worse.

I have been practising your handwriting, the way you used to loop the y so it swings like a skipping rope. My attempts look like a spider that has fallen in the ink pot, but I kept going until one line came out right. At the bottom of the page, where you always signed off, I wrote the words you finished every letter with, all my loving, and I pressed so hard the nib split and left a blue scar across the paper.

The man from the council says the lift will be mended by Friday. I'll believe it when I hear it hum. Come home in one piece, and bring that porthole with you in your head. All my loving, Marion.
