A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell the stag had the top knuckle of the middle finger, which he considered the best seat in the house, and he said so every morning before anyone else had got their eyes open. The cat, Mrs Thimble, sat on the first knuckle and said nothing, which was how she won most arguments. The little mouse, who had been tucked down the side of the pinkie since the summer of the lorry crash, was not invited to these meetings and came anyway.

One grey Tuesday the fist unclenched on the bus seat and the four of them tumbled out into the light. They had never seen a desert before, only the inside of a knuckle and, for the mouse, a bag of crisps. The road ran straight through a ridge of rust-coloured rock, and a single lorry shimmered at the far end like a rumour. Pell spread his antlers wide and declared the whole thing his. Mrs Thimble stretched and walked the white line down the middle as if she had paid for it.

Then the wind got up and the mouse discovered he could not hold on. He slid from the side of the finger into the dust, and the other three stopped quarrelling at once, which surprised everybody, including themselves. Pell lowered his antlers and the cat hooked a claw through one tine. They hauled him up together, fur full of grit, while the lorry came closer until its horn sounded like a cow with a grievance.

Back in the fist, when the hand closed again, nobody mentioned the road. Pell still claimed the top knuckle. Mrs Thimble still sat on the first. But the mouse now rode a little higher along the pinkie, and every so often one of them would look sideways at the others with an expression that meant I've still got your back, you idiot.
