Corgi outline on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of a corgi in mid-stride sits on the side of a finger, with the dog facing left and its tail curled up at the back. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink sits on pale skin. The plain pale brick background keeps the focus on the small design and the hand.

Dear Nell,

The ferry was late again, so I took Pilot down to the slip to wait with the crates of cheese and the post sacks. He ran the whole length of the quay with his short legs going like wind-up toys, ears flat, tail curled over his back as if he had an appointment he was nearly late for. Mr Halloran at the chandlery swears he has never seen a dog so set on leaving the island.

The truth is Pilot has never been further than the shop. Every afternoon he trots out the lane towards the pier as though the mainland is waiting on him personally. Last week he got his head stuck in the railings by the bait shed, and when Dad lifted him out he kept facing the water, twitching, as if someone had called his name from across the bay.

Today I finally followed him past the lighthouse path to see where he was going. He stopped at the end of the breakwater, beside the old timetable still nailed to the post, and sat there with his nose up, reading the grey sea. Then he turned round and trotted home to his bowl, pleased with himself, as if he had checked the weather for us and found it fine.

I've enclosed a pressed sprig of sea pink he dragged up from the dunes. Keep it somewhere dry. Come at Easter and we'll walk him down together, and you can tell me whether he looks like he's coming home or going.

Love, Anna
