The frost had got into the sheep trough again by the time I came down the lane, and Dad was already out at the gate with the crowbar, swearing at the ice in the same low voice he kept for the cows. I left the milk churns for later and went to the kitchen table, where Gran's almanac lay open under the lamp the way she always left it, pencil marks in the margins like a row of small secrets.

She had a private shorthand for the year. A circled dot meant the sun would show before noon, a crescent that the ewes would lamb in the dark of the moon, an arrow that the wind was going round to the north, and a triangle, sharp as a shed roof, for the days we should keep the dogs in. Nobody else on the farm could read it. Dad called it nonsense, but I had copied the whole thing out in pencil at twelve so I would not lose it when she went.

This morning the arrow pointed east and the triangle sat under Tuesday. I looked out at the grey sky and the iron puddles and decided Gran had only been wrong once in forty winters, the winter she died, when she had left the margins blank.

I took the pencil and drew a small circle beside Thursday, a dot in its middle. Then, because the sun was already breaking low over the top field, I went out to tell Dad the trough could wait.
