Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A cartoon baby creature with large eyes, a small open mouth and spiky grey hair sits curled up, with a large blue tail that spirals at the tip. The linework is bold and black, with soft airbrushed shading on the grey body and blue tail. Blue and grey ink dominate against the pale skin, with a faint pink flush around the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The baby was supposed to be asleep in the airing cupboard, but Mrs Aldous found him at half past six on the kitchen windowsill, wrapped three times around the tap and licking the drips off the brass with a tongue the colour of cough sweets. His tail, blue as a gas flame and twice his length, had been curled into a neat spiral on the draining board all night, like a sleeping cat that had forgotten it was a cat.

Nobody in the Aldous house had been told where he came from. The postman had delivered him in a shoebox marked fragile, and the note inside said only: keep him dry and do not let him have the marmalade. Pearl Aldous read it twice, then gave him a saucer of warm milk and a teaspoon to play with, because a creature that size, grey as wet slate and with hair like a hedgehog's bad morning, did not look like something that could be argued with.

By the second week he had learned the stairs, the cat's name and how to unhook the larder latch with the tip of his tail. The tail was the trouble. When he was pleased it uncurled and drummed on the floorboards, and when he was frightened it wound itself into the tightest spiral in Kent. On the Friday the vicar called about the summer fete, and the baby, hearing a stranger's laugh, coiled so hard he rolled off the table and sat in the flour bin, looking up with enormous eyes, as if to ask whether he was allowed to stay.

Pearl said yes, of course. She tied a blue ribbon to the end of his tail so everyone could see where it finished, and the fete raised eleven pounds for the church roof. Every morning since, he has sat on the sill with the ribbon fluttering, watching the lane for another shoebox with a second note in it, and so far none has come.
